"Wedding Cake"

During the Victorian gold rush of 1880, cast-iron reached extreme heights of elaboration. Houses were decorated like wedding cakes, with an amazing variety of verandahs, mouldings and intricate lacework. Roofs vanished behind parapets topped with ornamental urns, shells and fruits, to proclaim the wealth of its owner.
